Michael Kraus

This course was interesting as Prof. Kraus had engaging lectures in which he told a story. you learned a lot through the lectures so it was important to take good notes. There was a ton of reading, and it was impossible to do it all however, if you paid attention in class, you'd be fine. There was one exam in the middle of the semester and two big papers that was pretty much your grade so you had to make sure to go all in on them. I don't know what the future of this class will look like as the prof is retiring .

This is an interesting winter term class, Kraus is very knowledgeable about the subject and his emotional and personal connections to the topics make it easy to stay engaged. He is also quite a funny person and is really interesting to talk to in all aspects of life, as he has been at Midd for a good while and has seen quite a few things. The course itself is somewhat demanding and the readings can be slightly boring, but the actual topics covered are pretty interesting. There is less connection to actual political events and theory that I would have liked, but for a historical deep dive, the class is a good choice.

Professor Kraus is a wonderful professor. Although the material is nuanced and heavy, the course work is doable. The initial test is challenging, but the two essays following it allow you to make up for it. Though his lectures are very old school, Professor Kraus is an enticing speaker and often humorous making the lectures a little more exciting. He is very understanding and is always willing to have conversations with his students outside of class. Overall great experience, and i'm so glad I took this course.
