Jason Duquette-Hoffman
I am a current freshman (class of 2029), and I took this class this previous semester and found it to be fun. I enjoyed the class and chose to take it because community service and advocacy have always been a passion of mine. I will say that Professor Hoffman is very relaxed, and if you turn in assignments late (like I did the majority of the time), you will be fine, as he really does not care. Just make sure you end up choosing a community partner that you are sure you will enjoy, as I did not enjoy my community partner at all, and it affected some of the takeaways I had at the end of the semester when we discussed the grade I was going to get. Additionally, the class is heavily related to group work, as you will (presumably) be with at least 1 other person for your community project/partner, but the homework is all individual. Make sure you don't fall behind on the reflections, as it's very easy to do so.

Great class! You learn about community values and work closely with a real community partner. You get to collaborate with board members and complete impactful deliverables for the organization. Jason is very flexible with deadlines too.
Community Connected Learning with Duquette-Hoffman was one of the most rewarding and enjoyable classes I’ve taken at Middlebury. The professor was incredibly chill, kind, and supportive, creating a relaxed environment that made the course feel meaningful rather than stressful. We only met once a week as a class, which gave us time to really focus on our community work and apply what we were learning in real-world settings. The second class slot was reserved for meeting with our community partners, which made the experience feel hands-on and personal. I loved that the structure encouraged independence and reflection rather than busywork. It was cool to see how classroom concepts connected to actual community needs and to feel like our projects had a genuine impact. Whether you’re interested in social change, education, or just getting off campus to engage with the local community, this course is a great fit. It teaches you collaboration, empathy, and how to take initiative outside of the traditional academic environment. Overall, I’d highly recommend it to anyone looking for a class that’s both meaningful and enjoyable—a chance to learn, connect, and make a difference while working with a great professor and passionate peers.
