I found the course extremely interesting. Jim Butler is very experienced and enthusiastic. He focuses on identifying his students' individual styles and finding ways to improve them. The only reason this course has a lot of homework is because it's an art course, so extra work is necessary to complete the projects we start in class. If you turn in all the projects and show up to class, you're pretty much guaranteed a good grade regardless of your art experience

I had an awesome experience with the course. Classes are long, but they go by fast as you are drawing most of the time. Jim is an understanding professor, passionate about art. He would always take time for individual instruction. Classes always felt new and interesting since we used several different mediums (ink, pencil, and watercolor). Homework consisted of only one drawing over the weekend. Grading, if any, was fair, and a constant sense of progression made me feel that my drawing skills had greatly improved by the end of the course.

Drawing from a live model has been a really instructive and interesting experience. Jim's lectures really helped me get a better understanding for human anatomy and the ways it can be observed from the surface. We've also explored different media throughout the course (ink, pencil, watercolor), which has allowed us to experiment more and find our preferred styles.
