I have a lot of mixed feelings about this class. I think it's fair to mention the difficulty of teaching spanish to a whole class of people with a wide range of capabilities in the language, and therefore the lectures weren't always very productive. That being said, she was always VERY helpful and accommodating when I went to office hours with struggles/questions. If my schedule didn't clash with the majority of her office hours, I would have gone to a lot more of them. In regards to the homework, I think there was just too much. Capitulos are online sections in McGraw Hill with multiple pages of questions that were typically related to the topic being covered. The main issues with these is that each page could take 10+ minutes, with many pages being due each night, and we couldn't skip around on the pages so if you struggled with one of them, you'd fall behind on that night's questions and most likely the subsequent nights' as well. With the written part of the homework combined with the Capitulos, it would take multiple hours a night, and that doesn't even include time you'd have to take for grammatical and vocabulary studying as well as hw from other classes. I think the idea was that the Capitulos would stand in for a lot of that studying, but I don't learn that way, and because they're graded, when I decided to prioritize the study methods that better worked for me, my grade took a significant hit. She's a very nice professor and VERY helpful during office hours, but the workload made it harder to figure out priorities in the class, and unfortunately made it harder to enjoy.

Within a week or two of classes starting, half of our class had dropped due to workload. By the end of the semester I was averaging probably 90min of homework every day, plus class every morning. Prof. Gonzalez is awesome, but definitely gives a lot of work. Sometimes I feel like her rubrics for essays simultaneously say a lot, yet don’t outline what she is looking for from students. I definitely learned a lot of Spanish, especially since I did not have much of a vocabulary base from high school, but workload and grading was rough for most of my class.

Profe was very enthusiastic which made me excited to come to class. Classes were chill and had a high school feel to them, given that the majority of our activities revolved around us conversing with partners. My only grievance for the class is that 95% of our work was busy work. We had to do a "diario" which was a shared document with a partner. We were provided prompts to write about and were also tasked with responding to our partner's writing. I did not particularly find this beneficial to my learning. For our final project(s), we were asked to tap into our acting skills, and I feel as though we were graded more on our acting abilities than Spanish, given that we were also asked to memorize pages of lines for our final minidrama skit. Even with these minor annoying things, I really did enjoy the class, and would recommend it to anyone interested in pursuing Spanish/ continuing their learning in this discipline.
