Buddhist Tradition East Asia
The Buddhist Tradition in East Asia An introduction to the development of Buddhism within the East Asian cultural sphere of China, Korea, and Japan. We will consider continuities of thought, institution, and practice with the Indian Buddhist tradition as well as East Asian innovations, particularly the rise of the Chan/Zen and Pure Land schools.
This course was interesting, and Professor Morrison is very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the course material. She is very accommodating and reasonable about extensions with proper notice. She is a fair grader, and I did not find the assignments particularly difficult unless you leave them until the last minute.
Prof. Morrison is a really good instructor with tons of knowledge in the field of Chinese religions and broadly Eastern Asia. I did not expect to learn much from an introductory course like this but I really knows exactly how EA Buddhism structures like and enjoys talking with her.
I took this class because I had a specific interest in Buddhism and found this class to be mostly about the history of the religion rather than doctrine itself, which I really enjoyed. The class can be slightly boring but Professor Morrison is super kind and seems to be doing her best to keep things interesting. This is a great class to take if you are looking for something with a manageable workload.

Morrison is an incredibly kind teacher that is very enthusiastic about the material she teaches. She is very relaxed and makes students feel comfortable expressing their opinions both in class and discussion sections. Sometimes, class lectures can be a bit slow leading to a disengagement with the material, however if you are interested in the subject of religion and are looking for a relaxed space to explore the beginnings Buddhism, then I recommend you take this class.

The course was interesting and well designed. Professor Morrison was kind, gave solid lectures and was accommodating. The lectures classes were all lectures that could become a bit slow, but were still enjoyable and valuable. There was a solid amount of reading, and fairly constant essays and reading responses, but Prof. Morrison was supportive and helpful for getting them done. Overall the course is a good introduction to the religion department and how Buddhism has changed as it has travelled from India to China, Korea and Japan.

I felt like I learned a lot from this class and gained a new perspective on the world through Buddhist ways of thinking. There was a good amount of reading, but it would often be short text with complex ideas. There is a good amount of writing too, but you are able to determine the schedule for your work and get creative with what you want to write about. Overall, I had a great experience in this class!

I thought that the class had a lot of reading and focused more on the history of Buddhism as it moved through the world rather than Buddhist thought or teaching itself. To me, this was a little boring and made it hard for me to be super engaged. Overall though, the course load is not too difficult, so is worth taking if the history of Buddhism in east Asia is of interest to you.
