Yumna Siddiqi
I think that this course was alright as an FYS. We had many readings for each class, and discussions felt a little weird but I enjoyed one of the books a lot so I think that made it worth it. I was never really interested in postcolonial literature, but I have found the basic principles useful in my studies of French later on.
I was really looking forward to this course as I had heard a lot about Prof. Siddiqi and shes one of the few faculty who offer anticolonial courses. She has a lot of experience and passion for the material, but she's a bit disorganized. I would've liked for her to lecture more than have class discussions.
My first impression of this course was that it was particularly heavy on the theory compared to the literature. I struggled with the theory and for the first half of J-term I felt like I had accidentally stumbled into a political science class instead. I recognize that theory is important when it comes to understanding all the implications of race and capitalism however so I got over it.
