Timothy Portice

I liked this course because the readings were really interesting and actually got me interested in reading more science fiction. The discussions were usually pretty interesting as well. Professor Portice is very chill and funny but also very intimidating. The only thing I don't like about the way he leads discussions is that it often feels like he already has an interpretation of the text and is not willing to see other perspectives. But the readings are super good and it's all fiction so they aren't too hard to read as well. The only assignments are discussion questions and 2-3 projects/papers so it's very manageable.

I would take a class with Professor Portice again in a heartbeat. He is the most engaging discussion leader I have ever had. He is a master of the content he is teaching and in a small group setting was able to personalize instruction very well. He was very responsive to the concerns of the class. Too much reading one week? The next week is more relaxed. He gave us many choices on how we could evaluate ourselves. The discussions were amazing. Take a class with him.

I HIGHLY recommend giving Pushkin and Prof. Portice a chance. Not only was the material of the course shockingly interesting and engaging, but Prof. Portice has an unparalleled breadth of knowledge surrounding Pushkin and Russian history that should not be missed.
