The Russian department is great! Professor Portice does a great job explaining concepts and leading conversations/activities to support learning. Homework is occasionally tedious just because it's everyday, but definitely has value and doesn't typically take up too much time. Bi-weekly unit tests, but I almost always feel prepared with little outside studying.

Definetely take this class if considering. Only a very specific person would actually be interested in this course, and if you are somehow on hte middcourse review page for it then definetely take it. Tim Portice is really actually the english teacher I've had and I've been really spoiled. The readings are absolutely brutal towards the end of the semester and you will have to easily clear 3000+ pages over the course of the semester, but they are good readings and you will feel awesome if you can stay with it. With Tim the whole time you will feel like you will be obliterated on the exams because the readings take so much to keep up with and then process, but he knows what he asks of his students and if you read and he knows that (he will) you will get an A. I did every reading and my friend did none of the readings and we both got As. However, do the readings because its an awesome challenge and really fun as a class. Definetely take this class for the A, good reads, and Portice's insults towards other students and authors -- its really fun.

This course provided an excellent overview of Russian literature as a whole. The readings were mostly interesting, though there were some specific authors who were not my favorite. Expect around 100 pages of reading for each class period and a variety of exam types.
