Ted Sasson
I particularly appreciated how the course connected historical events to contemporary Jewish American experiences. The readings, discussions, and lectures helped me see how themes such as identity, community, and belonging continue to evolve across generations.
The study tour to NYC makes it worth it. Good for Jewish and non-Jewish students to learn together and ask questions that people might be too afraid to ask outside of the classroom. I loved the readings -- they are from books written within the last year, making them easy to digest and relatable. Sasson is accommodating and understanding.
This course covers an incredibly interesting topic which professor Sasson has a deep passion for. There are readings due for every class which are relatively comprehensible, not overly long, and contributes heavily to content discussed in class so they are important to do to do well. With so much material, professor Sasson is incredibly helpful one on one at office hours. This course is NOT a course on Israeli-Palestinian politics, it is a course on Israel. Since this conflict does however contribute heavily to the sociopolitical state of Israel, it is covered in a manner that puts a spin on the views that we generally interact with, digging into the historical roots of the conflict rather than just the perceptions of the conflict today.
