Sean Peters

Sean Peters is one of my favorite professors I’ve ever had. He’s genuinely hilarious, which makes his lectures (which were few in this class) entertaining. He also cares about getting to know you as a person, remembering stuff about my personal life and academic interests. A large part of this class was based on you messing around with software and figuring things out. He won’t baby you through every step, instead encouraging you to try stuff and fail until you get the result you want. For some students in the class, this was infuriating. I thought this was a great way to learn and I loved figuring out new things in ArcGIS and excel. I also loved that his assignments were vague enough that you could do what interested you (which for some people was also a struggle). He’s a stickler for small details when grading, but is overall very fair and gives extra credit for creativity and high effort. He gives no extensions for any reason, but if you don’t procrastinate, there was usually adequate time to do the assignments.

Data in Earth Science was challenging, confusing, and frustrating. I think the skills I learned in this course are important and useful, specifically the introduction to ArcGIS. Dr. Peters' lectures were chaotic and confusing, and I did not like his teaching style. He refused to answer clarifying questions about the course material because he wanted his students to struggle to learn more. Dr. Peters was a fair grader, but his comments on projects were harsh, and his expectations are high.

This course was quite frustrating to be honest. The work load was not too bad, as there was only 8 assignments in total for the entire semester (5 assignments, 2 lecture summaries, 1 final project). The work required in the assignments forced us to have a solid understanding on various complex applications, which was a VERY frustrating and time-consuming process. Unless you have an interest in Environmental Science or just really dislike math classes, I would not take this class. Professor Peters was very kind and funny though, and he was very passionate about the material that is taught in this course. At time though, he could be a bit unhelpful, but it is because he wanted us to struggle with the applications so we learned how to use them ourselves.
