Sean Peters

Professor Peters is a silly goofy guy, very entertaining to be in class with. He has high expectations, and pushes pupils to try things on their own and report back failures and learning. This was the first semester the class was offered so I'm sure it will be improved next year. For example we spent an extra week or 2 on GIS instead of looking at some other tools, and there some lecture times which were just given for working on the problem sets. Assignments ramped up in terms of workload but nothing really every took super long. If you are taking this class and have a Macbook, USE THE GIS LAB. IT told us we could use the Windows App virtual machine on our Mac and it was the slowest piece of software I've ever used in my life. Finished the GIS assignments probably 50 times faster when using the GIS Lab computers in Bihall.

Sean was super enthusiastic. The course was difficult, and learning GIS was tough but super rewarding. The rate of projects was pretty reasonable- 1 due every 2 weeks. I enjoyed the creative freedom he gave us.

Sean Peters is one of my favorite professors I’ve ever had. He’s genuinely hilarious, which makes his lectures (which were few in this class) entertaining. He also cares about getting to know you as a person, remembering stuff about my personal life and academic interests. A large part of this class was based on you messing around with software and figuring things out. He won’t baby you through every step, instead encouraging you to try stuff and fail until you get the result you want. For some students in the class, this was infuriating. I thought this was a great way to learn and I loved figuring out new things in ArcGIS and excel. I also loved that his assignments were vague enough that you could do what interested you (which for some people was also a struggle). He’s a stickler for small details when grading, but is overall very fair and gives extra credit for creativity and high effort. He gives no extensions for any reason, but if you don’t procrastinate, there was usually adequate time to do the assignments.
