Obie Porteous

Obie is a great professor. He is clearly very passionate about his subject material, but sometimes he goes a little too fast when explaining the models we learn in class. Your grade is very dependent on the 3 exams in this course, but thankfully they are curved.

Porteous is the man. To be brutally honest, there is a lot of reading in the class, but they are super interesting and I found myself really excited to read them. Also, each class starts with a short (very straightforward, although sometimes very specific) quiz so it makes reading/skimming a must. Class is super discussion based which makes it exciting and Porteous is super high energy, making it a lively environment.

The material was so fun to read and very insightful, and Porteous is very passionate about it and his work for sure. But he can be a pretty tough grader on exams, so just make sure that you are confident in your writing ability. There are also a lot of quizzes on the readings in class; they are very short, like 2 or 3 questions, and mostly multiple choice, so they're not hard per se, but there is a quiz at the start of every lecture.
