Obie Porteous

Difficult material to understand, but if you go to office hours the professor will help you better understand. I wouldn't say its an easy class, but since its required for the major you just need to take it.. Stay on top of your work, go to office hours, and you should be just fine. Exams were also very fair if you studied well, problem sets were graded pretty harshly.

Obie is obie. I avoided taking this class because I heard how strict and tough he was but honestly it wasn’t that bad. Extremely interesting material. He goes pretty fast in class and cold calls students but doing the readings initially will help understand the material in class. Problem sets are hard so make sure you allocate enough time and go to office hours. He doesn’t just give out answers so pinpointing what exactly you don’t understand helps him explain it to you again. Exams are tough, but he curves which is something.

I actually really enjoyed this class. Professor Porteous is very effective in his teaching style - clear and concise in explaining concepts. I definitely got a lot out of this course. It was very fast-paced though, but as long as you take good notes and make sure you review the concepts before/after class then you will be fine. Professor Porteous is notorious for being a tough grader, but if you truly understand the material, you'll do good in the exams.
