Cannot stand this professor. At least with this course, she doesn't actually want to engage in any real discussion or talk about the films with any nuance. genuinely this class felt like a glorified book club, but with movies. Also, would regularly assign two movies and two readings to do in one night which takes genuinely five hours. She was really defensive of people criticizing the movies and also spent an annoying amount of class implying that we were really biased and needed her to enlighten us about how studio ghibli movies are so artistic. Which yeah, they're great movies and they're very artistic. they're also incredibly mainstream. I don't know why she thinks she's the first person ever to enjoy these. She also did not actually engage in discussion whatsoever. Like we would raise our hands and say things and she would just be like "okay" and move on. No adding on to what people said, no letting the students drive the discussion. I wish I had liked this class more because the subject matter is objectively awesome.

Dobreva is a great professor and teaches the subject well. I didn't love some of the film choices, but there will always be a layer of personal preference and bias that goes into that. Overall a very chill class if you want something to break up a more difficult schedule and can be very interesting at times.

For a first year seminar, this course definitely has a lot of writing, with a large writing assignment almost every week. The course is a lot like a film class, with the focus of many classes being a discussion of a movie or TV show episode. Professor Dobreva is very accommodating, which is nice. This course would be good for someone who is interested in a film major, or interested in science fiction.
