Nikolina Dobreva
This class will make you fluent on the development of the anime industry. There isn't much homework but the class is entirely discussion based and at the end of almost every class you will have to submit discussion answers to some guiding questions that the professor provides. There is a midterm paper, one group presentation and a final paper apart from weekly screenings. There also is additional media assigned for the students to view outside of the screenings and prior to the class.

Dobreva is a super nice professor. She will regrade your assignment if you submit it late, and is incredibly encouraging during the various discussion. Most of the writing assignments for this course are due in class with a group, so it is not too much pressure and can be easy if you can find a pretty smart group of people to join. The midterm is probably the hardest thing about this class; it's two moderately lengthy essays on what was covered in class, backed up by the reading and media you've seen.

I really enjoyed my time with this course, but the workload is heavier than expected (even though Professor Dobreva was very upfront about the time that would be required to keep up). Readings and viewings are a necessity and discussions are a constant. Readings themselves can be dense and lengthy, but are important to get the most out of the class and engage enough in discussion. Dobreva also follows the syllabus to a T (a tad strict on her policies) and can be a bit of a tough grader. However, she will accommodate as needed and truly does seem to want the best for her students. The discussions were very useful and informative, but do be aware that the class moves somewhat quickly and can be a bit difficult without some prior film or art knowledge or awareness. Overall, the course was incredibly fun and engaging even if a bit difficult at times and Dobreva was a wonderful professor and discussion facilitator; do take it if you're interested in anime and its development! Just be prepared to spend a lot of time and energy on the class both outside of and in it.
