Meaghan Winder
Alex's teaching style is very engaging, and despite the morning lectures being packed, he was still accommodating to our needs. We were taught the basics of RStudio and its applications, completing a project in the afternoon session. You are usually walked through what to do, making it easy for anyone to follow along with the class.
As someone with no prior experience in statistics or data science this class was very fast-paced and challenging. I had to go to office hours a lot because it was hard to get questions answered in class. Professor Winder is invested in her students' learning and understanding and she seems like she really cares. Most of the class is project based and you could work in a group for 4 out of 5 of the projects. There were reading quizzes almost every class which were hard but they weren't that much of our overall grades. You definitely can't miss a lecture or skip the reading because you will fall behind quickly.

Professor Winder is very kind and approachable. This class involves a lot of coding, and the professor is clearly aware that this could be challenging for many students, especially those who are new to coding. She knows the material very well and is very passionate about statistics, and if you have questions, she is almost always willing to help and explain things. The skills learned in this class are quite useful, especially if you plan to take other courses that use R. Part of the course is project-based. The workload, time commitment, and grading are fair. There are also opportunities to earn back points, and as long as you put in the effort to ask for help and communicate, there is no need to stress too much about grades.
