Advanced Topics in Electronic Music Building on the topics covered in "Introduction to Electronic Music", this hands-on course will explore advanced techniques in music production including sound design, mixing, and mastering. The goal of the course is to apply these advanced techniques toward individual creative projects and a class compilation album to be released through a record label. In addition to lectures, listening sessions, critiques, labs, creative projects, film screenings, and hands-on activities, we will hear from active professionals in the field of music, business, and publicity in order to build the necessary skills to become active working professionals.

Introduction to Electronic Music In this course we will unpack the fundamentals of audio recording, music production, and songwriting including analog / digital audio, signal processing, recording, producing, sequencing, automation, and MIDI. The course has two goals: 1) to build technical skills using a digital audio workstation (DAW) and 2) to apply these skills toward creative projects and exercises. Through lectures, listening sessions, readings, labs, creative projects, film screenings, and hands-on activities, we will build the necessary skills to produce a musical idea or composition in the digital domain for playback and release.

Electronic Music: Digital Audio Synthesis & Production In this course we will learn how to create music using technology. Through lectures and lab sessions, we will explore fundamental topics in electronic music production such as MIDI, recording, arranging, and sound design within a digital audio workstation (DAW). We will also touch upon advanced topics including mixing and mastering. Each student will learn to apply these tools and techniques in tandem by composing and submitting an original piece of music for a public exhibition at the end of the term. The class will be divided into multiple sections based on skill level, and it is open to all students regardless of prior experience. He releases music under the moniker Alighted and operates a record label called Garden Broom Recordings. I actually really enjoyed this class. I came in with little to no music production knowledge and professor was always there at office hours to help me out. The coursework is super fun and there are many different ways that the professor challenges the students to push their boundaries.  

This course was great. You got to learn how to use ableton live, especially if you have never used a software like this. Weekly easy quizzes that were super quick. A few big projects throughout the semester and it was great!l 

This course was incredibly fun and engaging. It centers around how to use Ableton Live in order to create music and most of the work is personal projects to make a piece of music. Mclean is very interested in the subject and very kind and helpful to all of the students.
