Marta Manrique-Gomez
Professor Manrique-Gomez is very accommodating and friendly towards her students. Her interest in the subject is high, but the manner of presenting the content made lectures difficult to pay attention to. Not enough effort was put into pushing speaking skills, and I would not say my spanish improved at all. However, I appreciated the professor's enthusiasm and positivity, and overall I enjoyed the content of the course.

Coming into this course as a freshman, I had anticipated it being much harder than it was. It was still hard but was manageable. Marta only spoke in Spanish during class and as students we also only spoke in Spanish. This was difficult at first, as I had to really pay attention to every word she said. Her directions were sometimes unclear, partially because they were in Spanish, and partially because she assigned homework different from what was on the syllabus some nights. There were nightly readings from the online textbook. Most of the readings focused on grammar, vocab and culture. Exams for the course were based on vocab and grammar from the textbook. We had two exams, two papers, and one group presentation in this class. Exams were difficult, as they often used vocab I didn’t know, but Marta was a very fair grader. The papers weren’t too hard. The group presentation wasn’t too hard. Reading the book that the presentation was on was difficult. We also watched three movies for this course, but you could use English subtitles. Marta was very funny and a positive professor to be around. She encouraged class participation, sometimes cold calling students. I gained more from talking with classmates, which we did often, than when she was lecturing about grammar. I learned the grammar better on my own. Overall, Marta was very knowledgeable about Spanish, wanted us to succeed, and was willing to answer questions.

Marta is very kind and clearly cares about her students a lot. I did not find this class super engaging, though it wasn't particularly difficult either. I wish we had explored more/different artists or had more engaging lectures on the artists we did discuss.
