Lana Povitz
Povitz is very enthusiastic and knowledgeable about what she teaches and that comes through in her lectures. She is responsive to what people want from the class. You can get away with skimming the readings but doing them will make class a lot more enjoyable. She is very nitpicky with her grading. Very accommodating to student needs and attendance is not mandatory (but overall participation is part of the grade).

This course was great because it covered a lot of topics that I had never even thought about. There is a non-negligble amount of reading (which you have to write notecards about) but it's not too challenging and often quite interesting. I also absolutely loved Prof. Povitz's teaching style – very easygoing, fun to be around, and engaging. It's clear she cares deeply about both her students and the material.

As a man, this class was probably the most interesting and valuable course I have taken at Middlebury. The readings are all quite interesting, although some are a fair bit graphic due to the graphic nature of the history of sexuality. Each week is a new topic, beginning with indigenous sexual practices and gender expressions, and moving into things like sexuality in the Cold War and during the Gilded Age. There is a good balance struck between the sexualities of different groups in society. I learned things I never would have otherwise, like the impact on eugenics on the early birth control movement. This all being said, Prof Povitz is still tweaking the syllabus, and the lecture content sometimes didn't align with the readings we had done for that class. Overall highly recommend for your history distribution.
