Leveraging Energy2028 We will consider how Middlebury can use strategic communications to leverage its Energy2028 work to address the climate crisis and advance the interests of the college. Through interactions with Middlebury faculty and external experts, the class will learn the advocacy techniques that underpin purpose-driven communications. Then, building on the work of stakeholders across the Middlebury community, the class will develop a detailed plan of activities to be rolled out when the Energy2028 milestones are achieved. The class will present its plan to the Energy2028 Steering Committee and key members of the College administration. This course counts as a social science cognate for ENVS majors.

Shaping Climate Narratives: Impactful Advocacy In this course we will examine how advocacy strategies and tactics can be employed to drive progress on climate issues. Throughout the term, we will engage with distinguished professionals working in the fields of communications and climate advocacy who will share their experiences and perspectives. Each student will prepare short exposés of tactics being deployed to impede progress on climate issues, and the class will collectively frame a documentary storyboard on how to counter such efforts. The class will also consider how Middlebury College might enhance the impact of its Energy2028 initiative.  Kim Gagné has amassed deep experience as an advocate in a career spanning the worlds of law, diplomacy, and government relations. Kim’s advocacy experiences include partnership at a Washington white collar criminal defense firm; service as a Foreign Service Officer in Haiti and Saudi Arabia and at the U.S. Mission to the European Union; and senior-level service in Microsoft’s legal and corporate affairs group in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. Kim is a Senior Counselor with the strategic communications firm APCO Worldwide and is Board Chair of ID2020.  This course counts as a social science cognate for environmental studies majors.

This was an awesome class, and I actually learned so much because of it. Kim Gagne is a wonderful person, and you can tell he really wants the best for his students. I still bring this class up in conversation because of how cool it was

This class was extremely fun and informative! Gagne brings in wonderful speakers from all the different sides of the climate movement and encourages productive discussion on the topics. The class mostly consists of reading materials like articles and lectures from different speakers. The final assignments are very easy and doable. I learnt a lot about storytelling and activism in this class. Would definitely recommend for an easy and informative J-term class!
