Best class I've taken at Middlebury. Doran is thoughtful, empathetic, and self-aware. Will dismantle everything you know about the news media and will teach you to have a critical eye for U.S. government interventions, especially in second half of the 20th century. Structure of the class takes a sociological approach based on critical theory.
It was super fun! I learned a ton and got a lot our of the class without it being too hard. The material really made me think and was not like anything I had learned before. Discussions were valuable without requiring too much outside work and the essay prompts were fun.
Probably the best class Middlebury offers. The readings were very well curated and super interesting, and never felt tedious for even a second. This class's material felt like the culmination of Doran's academic interests and career, he was so enthusiastic and knowledgable that it was impossible not to feel the same. Couldn't recommend it enough.
