John is very passionate about architecture, but is not the best at conveying ways to improve your design. The course was very project heavy, and each class was dedicated mostly to lectures about architectural concepts. These presentations were interesting and were good background for the course, but that meant there was minimal class time allotted for working on projects and critiques. The course was interesting and I really enjoyed the final project. That being said, do not take this class if you already have a heavy work load. This course requires a lot of time outside of class to work on projects, and only ramps up as the semester continues. John is a fair grader, but will not give direct feedback about what to improve in your project. I would definitely recommend this course if you have time in your schedule, but it's not one where you can rush or miss homework assignments.

John is nice but the course had no feedback at all during the semester even after repeated requests for it. The course alternated between no work and 10+ hours a day. There were almost no grades at all given, so you had no idea how you were doing until you recevied your final grade.

I feel that no one is really taking this course unless they need to, and I think that's wise- I will say, however, I enjoyed the coursework, yes, it'd be difficult, and you must put a lot of time and effort in outside of the already 5 1/2 hrs of studio time a week. It was extremely rewarding, and at the end of the day, I learned online architecture and design software, could 3d print, had access to the wood shop/painting area, and laser print. You get a lot of valuable information out of this course, but I'd be lying if I said it was easy. I you like being hands-on and creative, I think this is a great class for you, that is, if you enjoyed intro, because this is maybe 5x as difficult. I like John as a professor, although maybe studio time could be allocated more effectively, he did really want us to learn and improve + it's always helpful to be taught by a practicing architect, whose firm renovated the very building we were learning in.
