Jennifer Strtak

Professor Strtak is truly a master of her craft. She is an eloquent, engaging lecturer, and her passion for and knowledge of the subject come through in every class. She will push you in discussions but always makes sure you’re keeping up and takes the time to explain anything you’re unsure about. She grades very fairly and gives thoughtful, detailed feedback. As a first-year who was considering history as a major, this class has made me sure. To anyone considering this course, I cannot recommend it highly enough.

The course was interesting in terms of material, however within discussion it felt as if there was a clear answer Strtak was seeking and if you didn't get it you were wrong. This applied to papers as well, where it was presented as an open-ended paper where multiple arguments could be made, yet there was a specific argument she was seeking. Again, interesting material but grading felt subjective.

This was professor Strtaks first year and I think it led to the course being easier than usual. Exams weren’t cumulative and there was no final exam so there was no external motivation to pay attention in class for the second half of the semester. She is very passionate and appreciates if you go to office hours, especially to discuss papers.
