Jason Mittell
Prof. Mittell is so passionate about the material he is teaching, and it reflects in his energy during class. The section I was in mostly sat on their computers not listening to a single word, which led to some awkward silences when he asked the group questions. I would say you definitely get out of this class what you put in, and the grading system supports this. I found it a bit confusing at first, but I realized it actually makes the class much easier and each assignment feels less like a chore because I choose which ones to do. It Is relatively easy to do well in the course, simply take some notes and listen occasionally before writing an essay that is graded pass/fail with very explicit requirements. The screenings are long, but all the material is uploaded onto Canvas so you could theoretically not show up and watch some of it on your own (to my knowledge attendance was never taken and not many people would show up.) Jason is an incredibly understanding and empathetic person, and if you put the effort into this course you will learn a ton of cool stuff about the film world.

I enjoyed this course overall, he had very fair grading and was very accommodating. The discussions can be quite annoying sometimes but it really is just busy work. I definitely would take this class again!
I would recommend this class to anyone who is interested in film or who needs to cover a regional distribution. I rarely ever worked more than two hours on homework. His grading system can be confusing but is forgiving if you miss some assignments or classes. As long as you take notes and submit five of the short assignments per week, writing the mini essays is pretty easy and fun, and getting an A is not that hard. Really nice professor!
