Febe Armanios
This was the most important class I have taken at Middlebury. Armanios's enthusiasm is infectious and I was surprised at how she made each lecture (every class was a lecture) so engaging. It was a high effort high reward class. The course material was fascinating and felt very important.
This course is absolutely phenomenal. Prof. Armanios is overflowing with intelligence, enthusiasm, energy and thoughtfulness. She approaches complex, intense history with piercing, detailed research and has no tolerance for misinformation and bullshit. Every class is organized, fast paced and packed with information. Not a single sentence is without meaning. Armanios is funny, easy to talk to, spirited and deeply wants to engage with her students. I learned SO MUCH in this class about the Middle East and American Foreign Policy, every class was like a sprint of information! Armanios is truly a gem, I am not a history major and most people in the class had no previous exposure to this material, she makes a dense subject extremely approachable. She demands a lot from students though, she expects all to participate, to do the reading and to do assignments. She does not have patience for people who "jsut show up" and demands a high level of engagement. This class is worth engaging in.

Early Islam and the Middle East is a course to explore middle eastern history away from a politicized and Western view. Professor Armanios lectures for both class periods, and is highly informative and an engaging lecturer. Additionally, she expects a high level of participation within the class discussions. I found her to be a critical grader of the essays and her expectations for the mid-term exam to be a little unclear, but I would still recommend this course as it pushed me to work on my writing skills as a first year, and was unlike anything I had previously taken.
