Creating New Enterprises To Solve Significant Problems: For-Profit and Social Entrepreneurship In this class students will explore how entrepreneurial innovators solve significant problems by creating new enterprises, and how these new organizations impact our society. In today’s society, entrepreneurship seems ubiquitous. At times, it appears that entrepreneurs can do no wrong. At other times, they are depicted as over-optimistic fools. Such polar characterizations may sell magazines, but they do not capture what entrepreneurship is, which involves a more complex and interesting story— in both for-profit and social entrepreneurship environments. Students will explore entrepreneurship in depth with the goal of penetrating the popular veneer and uncovering the essence of starting and growing new enterprises designed to solve significant societal problems.

Ernie and Rob did a fantastic job with this course. They are both some of the best professors I've had here because of how down to earth and realistic they are, but they really want you to learn the necessary skills to life after college. The class was super insightful and everyone worked well with each other.

Ernie is a good guy. He cares for his students and wants to make sure they are taking away the most from the course. I appreciate his advice on careers and professionalism. Favorite aspect of the course was the constant guest he brought. The class had the opportunity to engage with alumni and and entrepreneurs from all fields and walks of life.

Everyone always talks about how school doesn't teach you essential skills – like how to use a credit card, what healthcare is, and how to get a job. This class attempts to address that. Every unit is about a different essential life skill that is bound to help you in some way, shape, or form. Also, upon completing this class, you get "office hours for life" from Ernie and Rob. It's clear that they care, and will be at your disposal for years.
