Took this course because I needed a filler in my schedule and it sounded interesting; wasn't something for my major. Hasn't been my favortie course here... LOTS of reading for each class. The classes are discussion focused which I wasn't necesiarly expecting; the room that it's in doesn't really make it feel like discussion focused as well because the room is for more lecture type classes. Have a few papers where he is a kind of fair grader, but confusing sometimes. Prof is an interesting guy; enjoys this subject you can tell, but is a bit all over the place with things and causes it to seem a bit pointless. Overall, I probably wouldn't take this course again or a course with him.

I thoroughly enjoyed Welfare Queens and Tiger Mothers. There are readings you need to have completed before every class. Some are very long and difficult to comprehend, but still interesting. Professor Cheuk leads discussions with so much enthusiasm and passion, and does a great job at helping students better understand the class texts. I think this course works especially well with a small class; myself and my four peers had great discussions and I grew to really value their insights.

I was sort of put into this class, but I really ended up enjoying it. Professor Cheuk is very passionate about the material and I did learn a lot about the history of the university. Throughout the course there are five (I think) papers that you write and three of them are just reading responses, but the others do require a decent amount of research. Our class was small, so every class we would just discuss the readings we had to do for homework, so you do have to make sure you read. The way that professor Cheuk explains things is very concise and sometimes abstract, so you have to make sure you are really focused on what he says. Overall though I really enjoyed this class and professor Cheuk is awesome!
