Eric Cheuk

Professor Cheuk is an interesting professor, he's very invested in the material and if your peers are too then it can be a good class. Unfortunately it seemed like half the class was too lost to really understnad. He isnt that bad of a grader but a little strict.

Erik Cheuk was extremely passionate and knowledgeable about the material. With that being said I really didn't enjoy the way he instructed the class. He assigns readings for every class, and every class consists of 1 1/2 hours of discussion with 0 lecturing. He tried his best to facilitate discussion but it was very theoretical and deep material that he just expected students in an intro level class to grasp and have productive discussions on. It was pretty clear that about 2/3 of the class was just speaking jargon in hopes that it would be a plausible answer. I think Cheuk is a nice guy and wanted his students to succeed, I just don't think they were set up to do so.

Black Studies was the highlight of my first year at Midd. I learned so much from the readings and Cheuk's insights. The amount of readings never felt too overwhelming while still being able to get a lot out of them. We were given three papers and a had to do a few reading responses throughout the semester but we had a lot of freedom in what we wrote about. This was great because it meant I was very passionate about my papers. As long as you do the readings and care about the content you'll be fine!
