Professor Cheuk is the absolute best. He's very intelligent, kind, and encourages you to think beyond the surface of the readings. Many of the things we talked about resonated personally with many students in class, which was really amazing to experience. The readings were phenomenal and gauged students learning. My view of Black history and studies has transformed completely after taking this class. Not only have I learned to be more critical when analyzing certain texts, but also when noting certain mindsets and ideologies that correlate with controversial & stigmatized topics.

BLST 0101 with Professor Cheuk was AMAZING! I really valued the course material, and how it explained how engrained racism is in our society, and how it dictates its structure. Professor Cheuk was very enthusiastic about the material. We would start class in small group discussions, then would open up to discuss readings with the whole class. I liked this because it helped me get warmed up before discussing with the whole class, which can be nerve wracking. We had traditional style papers, as well as papers that challenged our creativity (we had to write a dialogue between authors of 2 readings we did, as well as write a letter from the future to the past in which racism did not exist). This class is easy to succeed in, as long as you do the bare minimum- do the readings, participate in class discussions, and demonstrate a genuine interest in the material. I would 100% take this course again, and other classes with Professor Cheuk.

Took this course because I needed a filler in my schedule and it sounded interesting; wasn't something for my major. Hasn't been my favortie course here... LOTS of reading for each class. The classes are discussion focused which I wasn't necesiarly expecting; the room that it's in doesn't really make it feel like discussion focused as well because the room is for more lecture type classes. Have a few papers where he is a kind of fair grader, but confusing sometimes. Prof is an interesting guy; enjoys this subject you can tell, but is a bit all over the place with things and causes it to seem a bit pointless. Overall, I probably wouldn't take this course again or a course with him.
