I really enjoyed this course with Prof Stoll! When you first look at the syllabus, you might be overwhelmed by the amount of reading, but it's manageable as it's broken up over the week and in general, the books he assigns are very narrative and pretty engaging. There's 1 in-class graded assignment and 1 6-8 page final paper. Other than that, your grade in the class is determined on class participation. Prof Stoll was very accommodating to any extensions or extra help students may need and was always happy to meet in office hours or over the phone. My only critique is that during lectures, he did have a tendency to drone on a bit, sometimes without a clear train of thought, which made it difficult to answer questions he asked sometimes.

Professor Stoll is really an interesting professor. While the course is mostly lecture based, he encourages discussion and dialogue with and between his students. Professor Stoll does not shy away from controversial or difficult conversations, and explore topics of human psychology and thought and development that really strengthen the course material. The class provides fascinating background and foundation for a better understanding of conflict and the world. This course, and Professor Stoll, pushes students to think differently about the very foundational problems and issues of our society. The course has readings every time, with the occasional reading summary to submit for grade. There is a sit down exam that is all writing, and a final research paper on a topic of your choosing. Participation and active engagement in lectures is expected, and leads to interesting debate. All told, a cool course for all students to explore, and get to experience the David Stoll Show.

David Stoll's style of teaching is tricky: he clearly loves the subject of cultural anthropology, but his lectures were seldom engaging and the readings were dense and hard to relate. It was around 150 pages of reading for each class, and sometimes movies (all outdated). The quizzes in class were challenging even if you did the reading since he expects specific recall from the large amount of reading assigned. Some topics were interesting/engaging, and it was a decent way to learn the way an anthropology course works, but I would recommend either taking this class with a different professor or looking for a different intro level anthro course.
