Daniel Brayton
I really enjoyed this class. The readings were really interesting and it felt like I learned something new every class I attended. The professor was really good at facilitating discussion and I felt like I learned a lot from both my classmates and him. I liked how our only assignments in the semester were 3 papers and we got to choose what to write about.
Brayton started off our first class by spending about thirty minutes detailing how difficult of a grader he was, and how we should not expect to do well. Instead, he promised that we would come out of the course as better writers. He scared a few people away, but the result is that everyone who remained in class truly wanted to be there. While the English department does not give away easy As, I have found that Professor Brayton is incredibly clear in his expectations. If you commit to growing and listening to his advice, you will come out of it as a stronger writer and reader. This was an amazing survey course, I loved all the readings. Highly recommend if you are considering an English major.

This course was really great. The readings are heavy, but that's to be expected in an English course. Classes are driven by discussion, but anchored in Professor Brayton's passion for everything Maritime-related. He is very accommodating and supportive to each student. I recommend it to any student... even if you don't feel passionate about the sea, you will be by the end of the semester!
