Casey Schine

I picked this course from my requirements with no coding experience and little interest in statistics. Casey is a gem. Take a class with her at all cost. She is clear and effective in lectures and makes office hours accessible if you need extra help. For me she's an exceptional instructor because she's invested in the content she teaches and that really quietly seeps into her students - she also makes it clear that she wants you to feel engaged in what you're learning rather than just keeping up with the deadlines. I totally wouldn't have gone to Data Fest if it wasn't for her.

The class was super fast paced and had 2 sections, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Morning was just learning about coding in R in general, taught by Alex. He is very knowledgeable on the subject and is very eager to help his students. In the afternoon section, we got more in depth about applying what we had learned in class. However, a lot of the material didn’t actually apply to what we were trying to do in the second section, which made it kinda difficult as someone who had never worked in R before. Professor Schine was super accommodating and understood that it was pretty difficult to understand what we were looking for and how it applied to the information we had learned earlier in the day. I did a decent amount of coding outside of class because a lot of the time in class was spent talking about what we were looking for and what our maps should look like.

This class was wonderful. I was completely new to coding, and it was a perfect introduction to R. I attended almost every single office hours, and my efforts were rewarded. While coding is inevitably frustrating, Professors Schine and Lyford went above and beyond to ensure we were supported all the way through. We had weekly homework assignments that built on one another and there was a final project to pull all of our knowledge together and tell a story of an argo asynchronous float in the Southern Ocean. If you need to take a stats class, I would highly recommend this course.
