Professor Millier is a very passionate teacher who makes literature fun and applicable to real life (even if it's fiction). I appreciated her ability to contextualize the time period that the novel was written in order to convey the significance of the work to its era but also to today. This course was a heavy grind for me (somebody who enjoys reading but isn't a book worm), I spent many hours in Davis reading these books and I think overall it was worth it. Just know that you are expected to read about a book a week for the entire semester.

Brett is so passionate about American literature and is a fantastic teacher. Although the class is fast paced if you do the readings and show up to class you will do well. Brett is always happy to talk one on one I highly reccomend going to her office hours.

As other reviews have mentioned, you're expected to read about 140 pages for every class, sometimes a bit more and sometimes a bit less. You'll end up writing over 20 pages for this course on account of both essays and the discussion papers which is also a lot. That being said, the books are good and Millier (mee-yay) is very helpful in getting through the more difficult parts. Exams consist of literary term definitions and passage identification/analysis. If you aren't interested in the material. this course will feel like a slog, especially since only 4 weeks of the course aren't dedicated to novels, so I wouldn't just make this your LIT credit. But, I still really enjoyed the class and would recommend it and the professor.
