Benjamin Allred

This class was a lot of fun. Ben is an awesome professor, and you can tell that he really cares about the topics he is teaching you about. Projects were super conceptual for this class (taking a poem/drawing and turning it into a model). This class is not concerned with math and structural integrity, more with having fun. That being said, this class is a lot of work outside of class. There are models pretty much due every week, and making these is super time consuming, probably about double class time to make them. Overall, I would definitely take this class again, but note that it is super time consuming and if you are looking to take this class to round out your schedule, I would take the time commitment into consideration.

Benjamin is a wonderful professor, and I would take this class again in a heartbeat. All assignments are basically projects, but there was adequate time and Benjamin was always helpful, and he gave us cupcakes. It might be hard to come up with project ideas, but this course does a great job at understanding and breaking down the process of visual design.

Probably my favorite course I've taken at Middlebury so far. Allred is engaging and offers plenty of one-on-one instructions. He will give one to two presentation-based lectures a week that will illuminate what makes architectural design work and how we create meaningful spaces. The workload is definitely heavy, and I lost a lot of sleep over the class, but if you are good at time management it should be less of a problem for you. If you enjoy art, design, or working with your hands, this course is a must.
