Andrew Swafford

The course was super interesting and centered around the lab. We had to create our own protocols and research. The course as a sneaky amount of work that takes WAY longer than I originally anticipated, especially as the semester went on. So long as you do all of the work, Andrew will give you a good grade, though it is a lot.

Taking this course was very effective in making me better in the lab. The course was largely focused on the lab portion, although we did have lectures and journal clubs. Exams were oral, and there was a final project.

This class was difficult for me because I did not have a strong background in bio before coming to middlebury. Prof. Swafford is super passionate about biology but I felt like he came very unprepared for lectures and did not find his teaching method effective. I often had to rely heavily on the textbook to understand the concepts. While he is super accomodating, I often felt like i was missing some of the structural support and consistency to manage my workload wisely.
